Return to the Sea: Branding Case Study
I was asked to create a logo for a film series called, Return to the Sea, showcasing women's surf culture around the world. The series was created and produced by Michelle Watson and filmed by Ardiel Jimenez.
Each episode is set in a different location, with the first in Puerto Rico and the second in the Philippines. I was lucky enough to be a part of filming episode 2 in the Philippines, during the Philippine Wahine Surf Classic in Baler, Aurora.
We wanted to create a fun, feminine, hand lettered logo with a bit of a tropical vibe to represent the series.
In my initial brainstorm sketches, I played with a number of more minimal ideas before deciding to continue with the more playful brush pen style that was more fitting for the project. The brush pen worked perfectly to achieve the carefree, ocean-inspired vibe we were looking to embody with the wordmark.
We chose to go with the brush pen script, above, that was a bit more feminine and playful. After choosing the style, I got to work sketching, tweaking, re-sketching and making the final changes to the logo.
