Stay Lit Candle Co. Branding & Package Design
Stay Lit is a limited-run candle company created as a self-initiated project to make holiday gifts for friends and family. The candles are hand-poured in small batches with soy wax, slow-burning wooden wicks and pure essential oils.
The branding had to be clean, simple, modern and on the gender-neutral side. I wanted to create a custom logotype that was hand- lettered in a monoline style, something that is relatively new for me. I wanted the product to appeal to a wide audience, since I would be giving these as gifts to a lot of very different people.
I started by sketching out the name over and over while figuring out different shapes to enclose the wordmark.
After I got close to the final lettering style, I started practicing with the marker and trying to nail the monline lettering without any mistakes (which took quite a few attempts). The shape had to highlight the wordmark and allow text to fit nicely inside, so I finally decided on a circular style which would allow more text to fit comfortably.
To get a clean version of the wordmark before bringing into the computer, I traced over the near-final version and drew it again. I like to make as many adjustments by hand as possible so that I don't have to do too much at the computer stage. I like to try and keep the integrity of the hand drawn letters whenever possible.
I finished sketching the final version and then scanned it into the computer. I traced the text with the pen tool to vectorize the lettering and then added the circle shape and accompanying text for the labels.
The youthful brand name combined with the modern wordmark and sophisticated packaging made the final product really versatile - able to sit on the shelves of a small boutique or alongside major brands at a trendy retailer.
